On Thursday, I will leave for El Salvador to observe the presidential election to be held on Sunday, March 15. This will be the third time that I have observed elections in El Salvador through El Centro de Intercambio y Solidaridad (CIS). This year's election should prove to be historic as Mauricio Funes, the FMLN candidate, is the anticipated winner. Of course, nothing is certain until the proverbial Fat Lady sings. Assuming Funes is victorious, however, it will be the first time that a left-wing candidate will assume the presidency. The ARENA party was formed during the civil war (1980-92) and has maintained national control ever since.
I will be joined by other Coloradans--Denise Peine, Jason Boccaccio, Jack Hunt and Graham Hunt. Graham has been in El Salvador since October working with CIS as a long-term volunteer. CIS is expecting approximately 250 observers from all over the world so once again it should be a rich experience. Thanks for taking the time to follow along!
